Introduction

In 1992, Hodeidah where shrimp is available in commercial quantities from the Red Sea witnessed the opening of a processing plant, equipped with the modern facilities to process and pack a wide range of quality seafood products. This was Musallam's first venture in the seafood industry. The plant has been applying the HACCP quality control system since 1999 and consequently received the European Union approval – YEMEN 05 and it is also approved by USFDA. Musallam Seafood division now consists of Aquatic Hatchery, shrimp Farm, Processing plant, Full – fledged laboratory and Marketing/Export department. In 2004, the company has set up their shrimp farm called 'Musallam Aquatic Farms' on the Red Sea coast at Lohayya in the Republic of Yemen. This facility consists of a hatchery of 40 million seed capacity and 50 grow-out ponds as phase 1 to produce 400 MT shrimps per year in a high saline environment. Musallam is the first and only one firm in Yemen to invest in 'Shrimp farming' on commercial basis.
